| The compound bent, single piece of wood that forms the back and arms on continuous-bow Windsor armchair attracts more attention than all other Windsor chair forms. This is true today and probably was when the chairs were first developed. In early documents they were called “round back” or “round top” chairs. They were 1st made in NYC and are truly an exclusively American design innovation and “represent a high point in the craft.” Making the compound bends for a continuous-bow armchair, however, is complicated. The problem of bending one piece of wood into a curved bow plus 2 arms on a different plane in a single session was solved by adding extensions to the basic bow-back bending born. These extensions provided the necessary support and shape while the piece was being bent. |
